Miami Springs police arrested Matilde Clariel Veras, 45, of Miami Springs, and Clara Mercedes Castillo, 39, of Miami, on Feb. 7, charging both with grand theft for stealing at neighborhood garage sales.
Police in the small city of 14,000 have been on the lookout recently for two ladies in “black spandex pants” who witnesses say have bolted from area lawns without paying for old shoes and cheap fashion jewelry.
“The two females have been stealing from all the garage sales in Miami Springs for the past couple of months,” a witness said in a Jan. 31 police report. The witness took video of the suspects “stealing” as well as photos of their tag number.
Items snatched by the duo, witnesses said, include a pair of “snake print rhinestone” boots and “nine gold rings.”
During a traffic stop Saturday morning, the two “admitted to stealing property for the past two months at local garage sales,” police said.
Veras and Castillo were charged with two counts of grand theft and booked at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, according to the Miami-Dade Department of Corrections database. Each was released later Saturday on $10,000 bond.
Persons with any information about other garage sale thefts involving the accused, call Miami Springs police at 305-888-9711.
